Nordward is ready to tackle this challenge! Instead of seeing this as something that limits us, we chose to see it is an opportunity to find new sustainable alternatives. We have great respect and care for the sea. To give future generations the opportunity to eat healthy, good and nutritious food we must take responsibility right here, right now.
We are proud to present our Sustainability report for 2023. We are particularly proud because we have succeeded in reducing our emissions in our GHG accounting while growing our business. We are extremely proud of our employees who take responsibility every day for the products we sell and promote more sustainable alternatives and solutions.
In 2023, we have met all our internal KPIs regarding the products we sell:
– Increasing purchase of seafood from low-impact fisheries
– Increasing purchase of regenerative seafood
– Reducing purchase of seafood from bottom contacting fisheries
– Increasing purchase of seafood from land-based aquaculture
The awareness of sustainable fishing is increasing. The most common sustainability benchmarks that customers are familiar within the seafood industry are the environmental certifications MSC and ASC. Within Nordward, three out of four companies are certified according to ACS and MSC.
Nordward’s product range also includes other product certifications that complement MSC and ASC. These certifications also entail stricter rules and requirements on that the products come from sustainable and viable stocks and has been captured with the least possible impact on the environment. Some examples of these certifications are Friend of the Seas, Alaskan Seafood and Label Rouge.
Fiskerikajen is a member of the “Foreningen for Skånsomt Kystfiskeri” (FSK) and has been part of the association since the foundation in 2014. Fiskerikajen, together with FSK and WWF, are commercial partners for the project “Naturskånsom Fisk – Från hav till tallrik” with support from Velux and the Villum Foundation. The project originated in the vision that coastal fishing should return to form an important and significant part of Danish fishing. The aim of the project is to revive Danish fishing by assigning information and innovation in relation to sales.
One of the biggest challenges for coastal fishing today is that many of the vessels dock at small ports that lack processing facilities and suffer from insufficient logistics. As part of the above-mentioned project, Fiskerikajen, together with the Kystfiskerne fra Langø and Kutterfisk ApS, founded the Kystfiskerikompagniet ApS foundation in Korsør. The foundation aims to only handle and sell fish originating from gentle coastal fishing. Products purchased through the Kystfiskerikompagniet are labeled” Skånsomt kystfiskeri ” and give customers the opportunity to choose an alternative that certifies a more transparent value chain with full traceability, minimal impact on the seabed and ecosystem, and that it is local catch.
